The price trend in the USA was 1365 USD/MT. In Q4 2023, the North American purified terephthalic acid (PTA) market experienced initial price surges due to supply shortages and robust demand from the packaging and polyester sectors. However, by December, declining demand and efforts to minimize year-end inventories led to a market downturn.
The price trend in Japan was 583 USD/MT. The Japan purified terephthalic acid (PTA) market in Q3 of 2023 was bearish with a large price fall. This was caused by oversupply, destocking policy, and weak consumption in the downstream. PTA price in Japan has dropped -7% YOY and -9% from the previous quarter.
The PTA market of Turkey saw a divergent price trend in Q4 2023. At first, prices shot up in October and November because of tight supply and growing input costs, causing manufacturers to slash operational rates as a strategy to protect profit margins. Destocking by market participants resulted in a price process by December and settle at 1065 USD/MT CFR Izmir.

Europe Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Price
Q2 2024:
In Europe, Q2 2024 experienced a rise in PTA costs. Increased demand from the bottling and packaging sectors, coupled with transportation issues, contributed to the price hike. While April saw some downward movement due to an excess supply and the hesitance of manufacturers to raise prices, the trend shifted as shipping expenses increased amid worldwide supply chain disturbances. Longer delivery times and port blockages caused additional pressure, especially in May, when international tensions further tightened supply. A revival in orders from the polyester and PET resin industries, which usually see a rise during this season, pushed rates up in June. Changes in the availability of raw materials also raised manufacturing expenses, further escalating product rates as the quarter advanced.
Q1 2024:
In Europe, the market during Q1 2024 exhibited varied trends. January witnessed balanced supply and demand, with undisturbed manufacturing ensuring a relatively stable market. Nevertheless, conditions changed in February, as ongoing worldwide supply chain disruptions, particularly in the Red Sea region, led to delays in freights from the Middle East and Asia, creating a supply shortage in Europe. This shortage, along with increasing shipping costs, caused prices to rise. Besides, elevated costs for raw materials like propylene further drove up production expenses, exerting additional pressure on PTA prices. Despite these supply constraints, demand for PTA remained constant, especially as the region faced uncertainties in global trade. As a result, the European PTA market encountered a combination of steady demand and volatile supply, leading to price hikes.
Q4 2023:
In Europe, the PTA market witnessed a subdued environment with a moderate balance between supply and demand. The market was bearish as it had stable production and availability of raw materials. Eventually, high container freight prices and the Red Sea crisis had an impact, and supply shortages were followed by higher PTA prices. Those tensions were reinforced by the increase in feedstock propylene price, but the demand for PTA was stabilized.

North America Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Price
Q2 2024:
Q2 2024 saw a shift in PTA costs in North America, moving from positive to negative trends. April experienced a significant growth in PTA rates, influenced by the Easter festivities, which led to a rise in the manufacturing of plastic drink bottles as demand accelerated in preparation for the hot season. The expectation of warm weather resulted in a rise in the need for PET, the material used for these containers, pushing producers to increase output. This chain reaction persisted into May, with PTA prices climbing due to rising PET demand. However, by June, reduced requirement from downstream sectors, along with logistical disruptions, caused a drop in PTA prices. A fall in raw material expenses, particularly crude oil, further weakened market sentiment, despite ongoing worldwide supply chain disturbances and unfavorable weather affecting shipping costs.
Q1 2024:
In Q1 2024, the North American market encountered a series of hurdles that suppressed rates. Demand persisted weak due to a deceleration in the polymer sector and the usual seasonal inventory reduction. Additionally, the market contended with cheaper imports, intensifying the strain on costs, particularly in January. The production segment also suffered, with a decline in fresh demand and export activity further worsening the market's situation. However, by February, rising logistics expenses and unforeseen events, such as a power outage at BP Chemicals' PTA plant in South Carolina, resulted in an abrupt supply shortage. This domestic supply pinch, combined with persistent transport problems, reversed the bearish trend, pushing costs upward.
Q4 2023:
The North American purified terephthalic acid (PTA) market was volatile mainly due to the weak demand from the downstream polymer industry and inexpensive imports that were competitive. First market woes were worsened by falling manufacturing orders. On the other hand, the growing freight costs, and incidents of force majeure at major plants resulted in supply disruption worsening the already tight market situation and forcing PTA prices upward.

Asia Pacific Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) Price
Q2 2024:
Q2 2024 observed a largely stable price for PTA in the APAC region. Despite an initially optimistic outlook, the market slowly transitioned toward a more balanced sentiment. Consistent manufacturing levels and steady demand & supply contributed to this stability, with sufficient inventories preventing any major volatility. The demand for downstream products remained moderate, which helped sustain the stable market conditions. However, the industry in Japan experienced some price shifts. Seasonal demand from the bottling industry during the summer caused a slight rise in PTA prices. This minor increase represented a deviation from the broader regional trend, showcasing the impact of local factors, especially in industries related to plastic bottle production during peak demand periods.
Q1 2024:
Q1 2024 in the APAC PTA market exhibited a combination of upbeat and restrained trends. Early in the quarter, Japan saw strong demand, particularly fueled by its plastics industry, which consumes large amounts of PTA. Regional trade activity picked up, leading to a rise in transactions and an increase in local searches, driving rates upward. The market also benefited from reduced oversupply, contributing to a more consistent pricing landscape. However, by March, subdued trading across the broader Asian market dampened optimism, and market sentiment grew more cautious. Enhanced transportation situations eased previous disruptions, enabling smoother operations and better supply flows.
Q4 2023:
Initially, in the Asia Pacific region, the purified terephthalic acid (PTA) market was characterized by a bullish trend as regional trade increased and demand from the plastics sector also rose. The market had a lower surplus supply hence prices stabilized with increased trading activity and shipping conditions. Altogether, these factors led to a swift comeback of the PTA market with surging transactions and bullish market moods.

Product Description
Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is a white crystalline organic compound mainly used in PET production for making clothes and plastic bottles. PTA, which is noted for its chemical stability and moisture resistance, is produced mostly by the catalytic liquid-phase oxidation of paraxylene in acetic acid, in the presence of air. It is characterized by a very high purity level, which is important for manufacturing good-quality polyester fibers and resins. TA's water insolubility and its properties in forming combined polyesters with glycols make it extremely useful in the textile and packaging industries. The adverse effect of this product on the environment is minimized through improvements in the manufacturing processes that reduce the emission and improve the recyclability of the end products.
