Polyethylene furanoate (PEF) is a bio-based polyester polymerized from 2,5- furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and mono ethylene glycol (MEG) through polycondensation. It provides high tensile strength and can be processed at low temperatures, which assists in saving energy. PEF is gaining traction over the petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for manufacturing films that offer protection against oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor. Consequently, they are employed in the food and beverage (F&B) industry to extend the shelf life of products and reduce wastage during transportation and storage.
PEF films are biodegradable as they are produced using bio-feedstock, such as corn, wood, bagasse and wheat-based sugars. A considerable shift towards bio-based and renewable materials due to growing environmental concerns and the rising need to reduce dependency on fossil resources represents one of the key factors influencing the market positively. Moreover, PEF films are thin and non-toxic and enhance the sustainability of the packaged materials, minimize the use of raw material and reduce the overall costs. The increasing trend of sustainable products and lightweight and green packaging is promoting the adoption of PEF films in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and F&B industries worldwide. It is also finding applications in microwaves, tape backing, plastic cards, protective coatings and flexible printed circuits. Besides this, as PEF films reduce waste and carbon emissions, they are anticipated to find usage in the electronics industry for fabricating flexible organic thin film transistors and organic photovoltaics (OPV).
