Dry eye syndrome, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), is a medical disorder that occurs due to the lack of adequate moisture or lubrication on the surface of the eyes. It is a chronic ailment characterized by redness, itching, aching, discomfort, pain, burning sensation in the eyes and photophobia. It can be caused due to extensive computer usage, menopause, allergies, deficiency of vitamin A, laser surgeries and autoimmune diseases. The syndrome can be treated by administering artificial tears, lacrimal plugs, medications and various surgical procedures. It can also be prevented by wearing wraparound sunglasses or other protective eyewear.
The growth in the Japan dry eye syndrome market can be attributed to the rising geriatric population. Dry eye syndrome is also widely associated with various medical conditions, such as diabetes, Sjogren's syndrome, arthritis, thyroid disorders, lupus and scleroderma that is highly prevalent among the elderly population. In addition to this, the increasing inclination toward activities requiring excessive screen time is also impacting the occurrence of the syndrome. These activities cause a high strain on the eyes, leading to fatigue and lack of lubrication. Moreover, various product innovations, such as the development of functional visual acuity meter devices that can measure changes in continuous visual acuity over time, are providing a thrust to the market growth. In line with this, the widespread adoption of hyaluronic acid that assists in retaining moisture and effectively treating dry eye syndrome is positively impacting the market growth. Other factors, including significant improvements in diagnostic technologies, along with rising healthcare expenditure capacities of the masses, are creating a positive outlook for the market.
