Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), or hypromellose, refers to an inert, semi-synthetic polymer produced from alkali cellulose by treating wood pulp with sodium hydroxide solution. It is colorless, tasteless and soluble in cold water. HPMC is commonly available in the form of gel, solution and jelly and acts as ophthalmic lubricating agent that aids in moistening hard contact lenses. Apart from this, it is also used as an alternative to gelatin in vegan food products and as an ingredient in bakery products. As a result, HPMC finds an extensive application across the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, construction and manufacturing industries.
The growing demand for HPMC capsules as a replacement for animal-derived products is one of the key factors driving the market. In line with this, the implementation of stringent regulations by the European Commission on restricting the use of animal-originated products in the pharmaceutical industry is also providing a boost to the market growth. Additionally, increasing health consciousness among the masses is also contributing to the market growth. HPMC reduces the oil content in deep fat-frying food, thereby minimizing the risks of developing chronic lifestyle diseases. Furthermore, significant growth in the construction industry is anticipated to drive the market further. For instance, due to its high water-retention capacity, HPMC aids in increasing the mechanical strength of mortar as the solidification occurs.
