Egypt Fruits And Vegetables Market Trends:
Government Support and Agricultural Initiatives
The Egyptian government actively supports the agriculture sector through various initiatives aimed at improving productivity and sustainability. These include subsidies, training programs for farmers, and investments in modern farming technologies. Such support enhances the quality and quantity of fruits and vegetables produced, driving market growth. For instance, in May 2024, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi began the first phase of a sprawling agricultural development project on Monday, aiming to improve Egypt's food security and reduce its reliance on imports. The Future of Egypt project seeks to reclaim about 1.8 million hectares of land by 2030, in addition to modernizing irrigation systems and increasing agricultural production. The project, led by the state’s Future of Egypt Authority, launched at a ceremony marking the start of the 2024 wheat harvest season. Plans are undertaken to replace imports of two million tonnes of wheat, 180,000 tonnes of corn, and 360,000 tonnes of sugar annually, saving $3.7 billion in foreign currency. He also set a goal of increasing Egypt's agricultural exports by 20 to 25% over the next 5 years.
Increasing Population and Health Consciousness
With a growing population, the demand for essential food items like fruits and vegetables is on the rise. The increasing health awareness among consumers leads to higher consumption of fresh produce, as people seek nutritious and healthy dietary options to maintain their well-being. According to industry report, the Egyptian population grew 1.4% in the past year, its lowest in 50 years, the Egyptian Ministry of Planning said Thursday. The ministry, which cited a report by the National Project for Egyptian Family Development, said Egypt achieved success in reducing the growth rate by 46% from 2017 to 2023. It noted that the birth rate hit 2 million in 2023, a decline of 15% compared to 2018. Egypt's population as of January 1 stood at 105.8 million up from 104.4 million in 2022, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. The agency estimates that 12 million Egyptians live abroad. Similarly, according to a global nutritional report, Egypt has shown limited progress towards achieving the diet-related non-communicable disease (NCD) targets. 44.7% of adult (aged 18 years and over) women and 25.9% of adult men are living with obesity. Egypt's obesity prevalence is higher than the regional average of 20.8% for women and 9.2% for men. At the same time, diabetes is estimated to affect 23.4% of adult women and 18.8% of adult men.
